This prescription drug (sold under brand names such as Fortamet®, Glucophage®, Glumetza®, Riomet® and Trijardy®) treats type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or combined with other drugs as part of a comprehensive care plan. Metformin belongs to a class of drugs we call "biguinides."
